These WWI rifles all started out as standard service rifles and were modified/converted to sniper configuration by the addition of a set of double claw scope bases and scope. ww1 german fortified front line position named u14 in no mans land with a mauser gew 98 sniper rifle with a partial dust cover leaned up against the wall and a mg 08 maxim machine gun in its sled mount next to it in a port a pit.
Optics form a multitude of different commercial manufacturers were used, mostly 3x and 4x in magnification. The rifle also bears commercial nitro proofs under the serial number on the receiver as well as under the barrel. It sure is nice to read an historical article for a change.
